Dear Preschool Parents,

Hope you all had a great week last week. We sure had a fun time at preschool. We continued our Friendship and Winter themes, and enjoyed a little bit of sun! Jenny continued using the Second Step Program (which is also used in grades K-3 up at the public school) during a morning circle time. Impulsive Puppy and Slow-down snail made appearances and helped get the children to discuss ways to problem solve with their friends. We discussed how other children might be feeling when they are left out, or when they are waiting for a turn to play. The children really enjoy these discussions and we are always excited to see the children practicing what they have learned with their friends. The children listened to more winter and snow books this week, and we hung up our beautiful snowflakes around the classroom. The highlight of the week was our amazing trip to the Funhouse on Wednesday morning. The kids had a great time exploring and playing, and it certainly was fun! That evening we held our annual potluck at the Senior Center. Thank you all for attending, what a great turn out. The food and company was fabulous. Jana was disappointed that she could not attend due to illness, but she is on the mend! Back in the classroom the children had a messy, gooey fun time making birdseed pinecones for the birds. We hung them up on Friday, and the birds are already enjoying them. We were lucky enough to have Nita from the Public Library come and read to the kids on Thursday. She read five books at circle time and our kids couldn’t get enough. Overall, it was a great week at preschool!

Next week at preschool Jenny, Amy, and myself are really excited to focus on early literacy. We spent time on Sunday going through our materials and have some fun stuff planned. The children will get to hear stories at circle time and then build on them with the felt board and props. Magnetic letters and sandpaper letters will be available around the classroom to start letter identification. We will even eat alphabet soup this week. Some of the older children will enjoy making sentence strips with a teacher, and doing some sight reading with some fun books we have. We also were lucky enough to have Christopher’s dad build us a bookshelf for the classroom (Thanks Tom)!! We brought over are many wonderful books that we had stored away in boxes at the ITC. Although we are focusing on early literacy this week, our program is always rich with experiences that support early literacy. We know that a child’s early experiences with books and language lay the foundation for success in learning to read. Reading to your child at home is a wonderful way to support his/her literacy development. We will continue with Second Step this week, focusing on empathy and friendship. We are planning on making some Gak this week (a gooey fabulous concoction). Gak can be tricky if it gets on clothes, so if you like, please feel free to bring some extra play clothes so we can really get messy!

Your children are a gift, they are amazing and unique, we are lucky to help them learn and grow. As parents we welcome your ideas, thoughts, and concerns. Have a great week!

Jenny, Amy, and Tess
