Dear Preschool Parents,

We had a great week at preschool despite the fact that we were missing some of our friends and Teacher Tess due to Winter break and illness. We took full advantage of the delicious sunshine by spending as much time in it as possible. The imaginative play that evolved this week outdoors was rich with group problem solving and language development. The kids did some reenacting of personal experiences as well as developing new plots. There is always what must be an exhausting amount of physical development outside and of course, joy.
Our theme last week was “I can do it!”. We celebrated the children’s independence and self reliance by brain storming all of the things the children can do on their own. Some of my favorites were; “catching frogs, sleeping, playing, and jumping”. In class we focused our lessons on self help skills like; hand washing, putting on coats, socks, shoes, zipping jackets and blowing noses. Many of the older kids were able to help our three year olds with these tasks. We read books with protagonists like Livingston Mouse who demonstrated self determination as he ventured out on his own for the first time looking for China. Christopher thought this was pretty funny. On Tuesday the children each made their own English muffin pizza. Being able to do things on their own builds self esteem and gives them the confidence to tackle new and challenging tasks.
This coming week we will be focusing on mud and rocks. It looks like the weather will be supporting us in this venture so please send your children in rubber boots. If any one needs a pair, we have a lot of extras. We will be working in small groups for a clay work shop learning how to make pinch pots and elbow pots. Thursday we will make mud tracks by walking through brown paint on a long roll of paper. We are filling our sensory table with potting soil with exciting things to find in it. This week will be one with lots of messy art projects. Please dress your kids accordingly.
Hopefully the expected rain will let up by this Saturday the 28th. We are having a work party to spruce up our playground. These are always fun, the whole family is invited and it is a great time to get together. Dante’s mom Kerissa and Grandma Gene donated two large bags of flower bulbs that need to be planted. We will also give our garden some attention and plant some peas. The raspberry patch needs weeding, and the compost needs cleaning up. Also, our beloved pirate ship is in need of some repairs. At 12:30pm we will provide some lunch before we get started at 1pm. We will work to around 3pm. Hope to see everyone there.

Jenny, Amy, and Tess.
