Dear Preschool Parents,

Last week was busy and full of learning. We continued our exploration of bugs and butterflies by reading related books (thank you Holly), doing art projects, going bug hunting, and asking a lot of questions. While painting their butterfly squish prints the children experimented with color mixing. They folded their paper in half and gave it a rub-and upon opening it up they were delighted by the symmetry of the painting. Counting and measuring were popular activities this week. The children spent a lot of time working together to make very long rows of counter cubes, counting them up and using them to measure things around the classroom. Wednesday afternoon our generous and devoted volunteer Katie Harvey worked with the kids to make blueberry muffins. This was a project she came up with on her own and the children loved it. Thursday we walked in the sunshine to the library to listen to stories with Nita. The children are very enthusiastic and polite listeners and look forward to their time with Nita. Reading stories with the children reinforces word recognition, predictable text, recognition of rhyming words and sparks the imagination which are all important pre-reading skills. Khadoma joined us at circle time with her guitar to practice a few songs the children will be singing this Thursday at our end of the year celebration. We are lucky to have such a talented (and fun) musician on our staff.
This week will be short and full. Wednesday we will be visited by naturalists from The Environmental Education Program at Camp Moran. They will be bringing all types of creatures (skulls and furs) for us to examine and learn about. We will also discuss which animals are living on our island. Although Thursday is the end of our preschool session, happily this is not a goodbye for many of our friends that will be joining us through the summer. The children will be decorating their crowns, practicing their songs and making cookies to share at the potluck. Our celebration will begin at 11am on Thursday. We will be set up down by the sand box out side, (weather permitting). Please bring your potluck items down to that area, there will be tables provided. The ceremony will consist of recognizing each child, singing a few songs and presenting them with their portfolios. After the ceremony we will enjoy Jen’s Pizza and the delicious dishes you all bring to share. Hope to see you all there. It is always nice to get together and recognize these amazing little people.
P.S.-A note to all you parents of upcoming Kindergarteners-there is a Kindergarten banquet on Thursday evening at the senior center. Dinner will be served, and there will be fun activities for the children. This is a great way for families and children to get to know each other for this year’s Kindergarten class.

Thanks, Jenny, Tess, and Amy
