Dear Parents, Last week the pre-school welcomed a new teacher's aide, Carly, who substituted for Emilie Gincig while she was away at a family reunion. Carly did a great job and we're happy to have her on our sub list. We also missed Emilie and will welcome her back on Tuesday. The children enjoy having the young adults in the classroom and the teachers appreciate their energy! Our farm theme carried us through a busy week and it went quickly. Teacher Amy brought in two of her baby chicks for the children to observe and pet, and we read a story about Emma, a hen who wasn't quite sure of what to do with the eggs she laid, until she decided to sit on them and they hatched! We read other farm related books (children love farm animals) and sang "Old MacDonald" and "Here comes Uncle Jesse". We also have a picture book version of "The Farmer in the Dell". Farm animal stamps and two toy barns were enjoyed by all. On the art table we created paper sheep with real wool glued on to them and they are hanging on our bulletin board. Teacher Cara ordered a butterfly kit for the classroom, complete with six live Painted Lady caterpillars. We observed them all last week eating, growing, crawling to the top of their cup and forming their chrysalises. They're quietly hanging on the side of their netting cage and, hopefully, by the end of next week they will emerge and stretch their beautiful butterfly wings! We will feed and observe them for a few days and then let them go outside. Thank you, Cara, for your generous gift! Since we will be waiting for butterflies to emerge, that will be our theme for the week, and we'll add some other flying insects that are visiting us at this time (ladybugs, bees, etc.). On Thursday, hopefully, another walk to the library for story time will be in order since the last one went so well. We'll plan a walk to Eastsound beach before the end of the month and let you know ahead of time. Teacher Khadoma will not be in the classroom next week as she is off-island and you will see more of Teacher Allie in her place. We will still sing some songs, and one on tape called "Ladybug, ladybug." A couple of reminders for parents: 1. On hot days please send your child with a swimsuit and towel; 2. Please try to keep toys at home unless they are small enough to fit in your child's cubby. Personal toys in the classroom are distracting to others and there have been some tears over a lost toy or not wanting to share toys. The children can bring a "stuffy" to cuddle at rest time and when it is their turn to bring the sharing bag they can bring something big and special. August is quickly passing and if you haven't yet registered your child for the Fall please do so as soon as possible. We need to arrange our staffing according to how many students will be enrolled. Hope you are enjoying these summer days. We are enjoying your children! Thank you, The pre-school staff Quote of the week: While camping with his parents, Forest heard thunder. He asked what it was and when told, he commented, "Who dropped it?"
