August 15, 2010 Newsletter

Dear Parents,
Greetings and hope this finds you all in good health. A recent bout of norovirus managed to close down the infant/toddler center last week for two days and hopefully there are no more new cases this week! Remember, if you or your child gets sick with this virus you must stay home for three days after all symptoms are gone. It's very easy to pass this virus so remember to wash hands often!
On a different note, last week felt like summer again with the warm weather urging us outside for various activities and waterplay. We had a visit from Jenny's son, Aaron, who installed our garden three years ago for his Senior project, and he spent part of two days working in the garden cleaning it up and preparing it for planting. With the children's help, he harvested a whole bed of potatoes (Ava said, while digging, "Look, a tato, a tato, I found one by myself!) They also pulled up carrots and everyone wanted to eat theirs right away. They were excited to see food come out of the ground like magic. Thanks, Aaron for your help and for playing with the kids, too!
We took paints, spray bottles, stamps and paper outside and created some fun art and didn't worry about the mess we were making. There was plenty of water to wash off with afterwards.
Our bunnies got a new playground last week when Teacher Allie's friend, Eric Beemer built an area for the bunnies to run and get some exercise and for the children to take turns petting them. Thanks, Eric, it will get lots of use!
Inside the classroom we checked our chrysallises and misted them daily but no butterflies by Friday. When Jenny went in on Saturday to mist them, there they were...butterflies fluttering inside their net cage looking quite elegant. Please check them out when you come in.
On Thursday we walked to the library for storytime and at circle we have been learning an interactive song about insects that has a catchy tune. We'll practice it some more this next week.
We made our own painted coffee filter butterflies and construction paper ladybugs, and baked some yummy butterfly biscuits.
Next week we'll talk about some animals found in nature, especially the ones mentioned in the song, "Over in the Meadow", and each child will get to take home a copy of the song in a little illustrated book. Midweek we will release our butterflies so they can enjoy life outside.
Khadoma will be back this week, and Amy will work for Tess on Monday. Jenny will be gone starting Thursday for one week, and Becky will take her place.
Let's all enjoy these last days of Summer because Fall is just around the corner!
